IT'S CHRISTMAS Eve morning about 9 o'clock, and I'm southbound on I-55 from Cape Girardeau. I want to congratulate the Missouri Department of Transportation for the terrific job it has done on these roads. There's very little ice or snow on the interstate between Cape and the Diversion Channel bridge. I really appreciate it, and I'm sure the other drivers do too.
WHY IS it at Christmas you think about giving to the poor? Why can't you do it every day of the year? Why does it have to be Christmas?
WAS IT me, or did others see that William Street and Mount Auburn Road look like no one bladed them? Come on, and get these roads looking a little better.
MOST KIDS seem to think they have to be entertained. Who taught them that? Why do they have to stay home? Most times there is no one there, and it's lonely to be alone. Give your kids a reason to stay home. I'm sure you can think of something. You will know where your child is and can sleep well at night.
DAVID LIMBAUGH'S column "Moral's hypocrisy" comes very close to describing the conservatives. He left out two other important items though: arrogance and hypocrisy. These two words describe the conservatives better than any others. These people want everything their way or no way. As the saying goes, do as I say and not as I do.
TO THE person who planted the little tree on his brother's grave only to have the tree stolen: Your little tree is not alone. It's probably with the rose bush that my father-in-law planted on my mother-in-law's grave in the same cemetery. My mother-in-law was so fond of roses. Come on, people, have some compassion for those of us who want to honor our loved ones.
CAN SOMEONE please explain why the runways at the airport are the top snow-removal priority in Cape Girardeau? Two days after the storm William Street was still almost impossible to drive on. But the airport is clear so we can get our 19-seat commuter plane out of here. If people can't get to the airport, what is the point of having it open. The city should take that $100,000 brand-new snow plow that is used exclusively at the airport and hit the city streets.
I HAD the pleasure of spending a few days in Cape Girardeau and Jackson before returning to California. I must say I had a good feeling about Christmas when driving around in different neighborhoods. Each evening I tried to make it a point to drive around and see some of the impressive decorations filled with the true meaning of Christmas. So many depicted the birth of Christ. You should feel good about the statement made in your neighborhoods. Upon returning to the town where I live, I also drove around to observe the decorations -- everything from Santa Claus, reindeer, sleighs, elves, Disney characters, candy canes, toys to lights of all colors and quantities, but no displays of the birth of Christ unless you passed a church. That's a sad statement, don't you think?
I WOULD like to thank Terry Weissmueller and the local farmers who used their time and equipment to clear the snow drifts from County Road 216 and 212 between Kelso and Chaffee. The county had not been through for a couple of days, and the roads were impassable. Thanks again.
WHY DIDN'T the city salt the intersections so vehicles could start and stop? And the city needs to erect speed signs on Lynwood Hills Drive.
