HAVING READ the story about the two Republican lawmakers who want to overturn Amendment 2, I have two questions. Do they think their on a playground with do-overs? And why do they hate democracy?
THE WORD you are looking for regarding the River Campus is not "stuffy," it's "cultured." Just because you don't understand something or appreciate it doesn't give you the right to slam it. You don't have to go to these events or pretend to enjoy them. Just don't insult those who do.
I UNDERSTOOD the Amendment 2 proposal as it was written. I and others gathered many hours of information before we went to vote. We were informed when we cast our vote in favor of the amendment. Not one person who voted in favor of the amendment didn't have the same opportunity to research the issue.
IT'S BAD enough that from September to November we have to listen to campaign ads, but now they're starting for next year already. Why?
HOORAY FOR the Missouri Supreme Court and its unanimous decision on the strip club law it struck down. It's about time somebody started putting these uptight, holier-than-thou, snooping, ultra-conservative, religious right-wing lawmakers in their place. If you don't like adult entertainment or rap videos, don't look or watch.
I WANT to say how beautiful the lights at Cape County Park North are this year. However, I have a complaint, and it has to do with the people who are looking at the lights. My husband and I have made two trips through the park. Both times we were frustrated by the time we got to the end because of people refusing to turn off their headlights. We go to enjoy the christmas lights, not others' headlights. The paths are well lit, and no one should have their lights on. The park should have someone at the start to ask people to turn their lights off so all can enjoy.
I LIVED in Canada for a number of years where there was socialized medicine and doctors accepted what the government paid them. It was the best system I have ever seen. Government regulation is required for socialized medicine to work, but is that what we really want? Think about it.
THIS IS exactly what I predicted before we went into Iraq: We would be lead into a slaughter. We should have gone after Iran. The American people are having to pay because the U.S. chose to do it alone instead of having everybody to go along with it.
AS A law-abiding driver, I am in complete agreement with Morley Swingle, Cape Girardeau County prosecuting attorney, over the adding of other substances to the DUI law. No matter what the substance, if it's illegal and mind-altering, you don't belong on the road. If it's in your system, that's effecting your judgment.
I TRY to leave money in the red kettles for the Salvation Army every chance I get, and I taught my children to do the same. However I was walking into a store the other day and there was a Salvation Army worker smoking a cigarette while ringing the bell. I passed her by. I don't support that. I can't support such a bad example.
I READ about a 12-year veteran of the Cairo City Council, Carolyn Ponting, who is a candidate for mayor, one of 10 persons running. Contrary to your report, Ponting at no time steered a middle course as the council battled the city's incumbent mayor. From the get-go, Ponting steered whatever course the mayor told her to take, making motions which he designed and failing to vote on most motions made and seconded by other council members.
WILL YOUR child be the last to die in Iraq? In 10 years, when relations are normalized with an Iraq run by an Islamic fundamentalist, will our dead young men and women be remembered? Will we feel the same way that we feel about Vietnam? House Speaker Rod Jetton said he wasn't ready to die for Somalia, but he supports the Iraq invasion, even after he knows it was on false pretenses. Would he be willing to die for Iraq? This seems to be the question we should be asking our legislators and those who are for this war. Will you send you child?
