Support and prayers

THE SOLDIER who complained to Donald Rumsfeld will not be punished by the brass. However, the soldier's comments were poorly timed, and the stage from which he expressed his question was inappropriate. This soldier hasn't even left the safe confines of Kuwait. He's in the rear with the gear and doesn't know anything about our battlefield other than what CNN has told him. Soldier ingenuity is part of the proud soldiers' tradition. The add-on armor that is being welded on can be fabricated to meet specific unit missions and should not be considered a second-class solution. We're fine. We have what we need. All we need from the American people is your continued support and prayers.

The first stone

DAVID LIMBAUGH really hit the nail on the head when he summarized the long-standing view that we liberals have -- not toward all conservatives, but most definitely about his kind of right-wing conservative. It doesn't take an air of moral superiority to see that, fiscally, he only cares about keeping what is his and opening the door even further for faceless corporations to further exploit our human, social and natural resources without being held accountable to anyone. And it doesn't take an air of moral superiority to see that of all the corrupt and inhumane nations in the world, the only country we deemed worthy of being freed by our armed forces just happens to be one of the top 10 oil-producing nations in the world.

Common sense is best

"UNIVERSITY professors with doctorates are more intelligent, more analytical, better educated and better informed than the average TV-watching, intellectually lazy Republican." Excuse me. Give me common sense over intellectually gifted anytime. I'd rather talk to those who have lived history than those that have learned from a book.

Fair ticketing

LAST MARCH I was ticketed for not signaling a right turn. Yesterday I was looking out the window of my workplace onto Broadway and saw a police officer tailing a car that did not signal its intention. What did the cop do? Nothing. I feel discriminated against. I believe in upholding the law as much as the next guy, but let's at least be fair about it.

Future wasteland

TO THE person who thinks Main Street should be closed off European-style. Many cities in the United States have done this with the hopes of saving their historic downtowns. More often than not, stores eventually close , and the area becomes a wasteland and gathering area for skateboarders and homeless people. That's what happened in Memphis.

Grades that measure

UNIVERSITY professors have substituted busy work for true thinking skills. This allows them to give high grades to most students. However, if everyone gets high grades, the best students have no recourse except to go to another university where grades are a proper measure of performance.
