Kids at the parade

I WANT to compliment Cape Girardeau on the Parade of Lights. It is a wonderful thing that you do every year. I love taking my children to see it. The best part is that you always have it on Sunday night and at a time when I can have my kids with me.

Reflection of light

I HAVE heard about "Green Eyes" at the cemetery for years. It is caused by the light atop Southeast Missouri Hospital. It is green on one side, and it gets reflected off of a couple of headstones in the cemetery. Those headstones sit right on the edge of the hill.

In teachers' shoes

I WISH every school board member would take the time to teach a class at every building in the district. I think they would be shocked to see the things teachers have to deal with every day. This includes overcrowding, little or no textbooks and more and more demands put on the teacher with fewer and fewer resources. Despite all this, the teachers prevail. However, I think the school board members might be a little more compassionate to the plight of the teachers if they would spend a day in their shoes. We are not complaining about the new superintendent's salary just to have something else to complain about. We just see so many better ways the money could be spent that would directly affect our students, which is who I thought we were here for.

Dads: Just pay up

MOMS ARE the caretakers of our nation's children. I am so glad our country recognizes that and provides for us moms to have sole custody of our children almost 100 percent of the time when marriages break up. Even the best of dads are just not able to be moms, no matter what they do, and children should always be with their moms. Dads do have their part though. They are there to make sure that the children are financially secure through child support. Their child support is all we need from the dads. Dads are not needed for anything else in a child's life. Moms can take care of everything else as long as Dad pays. They should be happy with that. It's a good deal for the dads. They don't really want to mess with kids anyway.

A bigger mission

IN RESPONSE to the reader who thinks every wounded soldier in Iraq should get a Purple Heart for receiving wounds: The Purple Heart is for wounds received as a direct result of hostile enemy actions while in a combat zone. To say that all of us will come back wounded is a misguided statement. I'm serving in Iraq, and I will come back a better person than when I left. I have been part of a cause that is for the greater good, a cause that many people on the home front do not take the time to properly research and understand. I have been part of something larger than my own life. I have strengthened and renewed my faith in God. I have re-energized my love of family and friends. And I will never again take for granted the freedoms we as Americans are so fortunate to enjoy. Please remember that we're not only serving our country in Iraq, but around the world.

Show some courtesy

THE AP story about the man with the enormous Christmas display in California was a hoot. It made the neighbor seem like the bad guy. But who in his right mind would want 1,500 cars a day driving through the neighborhood? If he wants to fund a Christmas display, do it in a commercial area. Same goes with keeping barking dogs and riding ATVs in circles in town. Show some courtesy.

Commercial radio

I WORK in radio. You would be surprised, I think, to learn that the commercials pay my salary, feed my family and support the local economy where I shop. If you buy a satellite radio, you won't hear any commercials, but you will be paying $10 a month to some company thousands of miles away that doesn't pay taxes here, doesn't have any employees who pay taxes here and couldn't give a hoot about our town. The people who listen to these radio carpetbaggers are people who won't hear the local weather, local news, funeral notices and lost pet reports. They won't hear about the crime that may have happened down the block or about the boil-water order that went into effect. And the tireless employees who labor long and hard to bring that information to you will eventually lose their jobs, because you didn't want to hear a commercial. It seems like a small price to pay for the quantity and variety of information available today, but that may be gone tomorrow.

Speedy schoolbuses

DOES ANYONE else ever notice how fast school buses drive through neighborhoods?
