THE historic Glenn House in Cape Girardeau is a wonderful place to tour during the holidays. It is decorated beautifully, and the hosts and tour guides are dressed in period costume. The Westminster Presbyterian Church choir sings Christmas carols in the carriage house while snacks are served. It will really get you in the Christmas spirit.

Christmas parade

OAK Ridge also had a band in the Christmas parade at Jackson. Don't leave them out.

Social Security raise

I got the information of my big 3.6 percent Social Security raise today. Not for sure where I will spend this windfall. By the time they take out for the increase in insurance, I will have a little more than a $1.26 a day to spend. Maybe I will buy something to drink with it, if I can find somewhere that gives senior citizen discounts. If I go without for a couple days, I might be able to give the Republican Party a donation so they can keep their Republican Congress and millionaires from going broke.

Cardinals offer

TO all of the Pujols bashers: He asked the Cardinals to give him a contract for 10 years so he could retire a Cardinal. They offered five years. You do the math.

Deer problem

I am getting tired of hearing people who are against the in-city-limits hunting because they like the deer and think they are not harming anything and that they are kind, pet deer. It is still a wild animal. They have the power to impale you and kill you if provoked or if they feel cornered. I drive down Lexington Avenue every day to get to work. One morning I counted 13 deer in the middle of the street. Deer in the wild run in twos and sometimes up to four, but never 13 or more. I was by the Kiwanis Park and had to break abruptly, along with the car in the other lane, because a baby deer ran from the apartments to the park. You can love them all you want, but they are a danger to you and your family.

Postal pensions

ANYONE who doesn't know why the U.S. Postal System is in trouble just hasn't been paying attention. It has nothing to do with the union or anything the post office is doing, but it's the congressional mandate to fully fund its pension fund for 40 years. That's something no business or other government agency has to do. They're funding retirement for people who have not even been born yet.

Hunting problems

LEGALIZING deer hunting in any fashion inside Cape Girardeau's city limits will, because of all the pent-up frustration over the economy, lead to an outcome worse than Pol Pot's 1970s infamous killing fields in Cambodia.

Obama, Robin Hood

I loved the Speak Out caller's comparison of President Obama to Robin Hood. Robin Hood was a champion of the burgeoning medieval middle class and the poor. So is President Obama. The caller's analogy hit the nail on the head.

Mail center

I was calling about the comment somebody had called in about the mail processing center closing and they hoped that it closed. I hope everybody doesn't have such a narrow-minded opinion. Right now with unemployment the way it is, why would anybody be hoping that a place closes and people lose their jobs? That is a horrible thing right now, wishing somebody would lose their job and a place would close. Plus, doesn't he know that is going to affect the local economy around here?

Urban camping

THEY are going to be hunting in the city for deer and they call it urban hunting. So if you are homeless and living on the street, I guess the politically correct name for that would be urban camping.

Deer's homeland

TY Metzger said it right. Deer have become a problem because the city limits are expanding into the deer's homeland. So now some want to exterminate them. If you don't want the deer, then move in town and rebuild the rundown areas.

Postal Service

THE U.S. Postal Service is as American as you can get. It has been there for all, and for many years been a supporter and employer of our veterans. Where is all the help for them? Come on, politicians, do something.
