Bad behavior

WHILE DOING my Christmas shopping I witnessed something that was disturbing. While waiting in a long line to be checked out, I watched as an employee offered to take the next person, and two older women cut through, claiming that because this young woman at the register had helped them earlier find a book they were looking for, they were entitled to be next in line. The employee tried to explain that since they had left to retrieve a book, they would have to wait back in line. These two women yelled at this poor employee. Having worked retail for 15 years of my life, I shouldn't have been but I was so shocked at the way that these older women were treating this girl. Please, holiday shoppers, don't take your bad attitudes out on the people who are helping you find exactly what you're looking for.

Pure propaganda

THE LENGTHY riposte reprinted from American Thinker asserted that Democrats are to be blamed for an alleged betrayal of our involvement in Iraq. The thesis of the article led me to think that this kind of irresponsible subjective spewing should lead the publication to be retitled the Formally Approved by the Bush Administration American Propagandist.

Bring back old movies

I AGREE wholeheartedly with the potential for the Broadway theaters. Renovate them and show classic movies. It would be another way to turn Cape Girardeau even more into a cultural center. We are already well on our way. Many of our younger generations haven't ever seen some of the wonderful old movies.

Restore old buildings

I AGREE with the comment about the old Broadway theater. I remember as a little girl my grandparents taking me there to see a movie. I think it would be great to see that theater open again instead of making it into something else like they did the Marquette Hotel. Restoring these old buildings is wonderful to see in Cape Girardeau, but restore them to what they were in the beginning. I know I would be happy, and I am sure others would agree.

Leaf-collection equality

THE LEAF-collection service in Cape Girardeau needs to be evaluated. The city picks up the exact same zones year after year even though half the leaves have only fallen when it finishes Zone A, which is where I live. In the past, the city recognized this fact and would come back through Zone A throughout the leaf collection season. But not this year. I called the city about my large pile of leaves and was told it would do follow-up collections after all the other zones were done. I guess the city is trying to save fuel, which is fine, but how about some equality next year and rotate the order of the zones? In the meantime, I guess my pile of leaves is headed for the street. I hope it blows away before it plugs up the storm sewers.

Great job with lights

ANOTHER GREAT job by the people on Kent Street. Another beautiful Christmas light display.

Depends who's stacking

HYPOCRISY: Criticizing Hugo Chavez and Pervez Musharraf for trying to stack the courts and constitutions in their favor when Bush supporters openly campaigned for the same thing in this country.

Percents, degrees

A RECENT report indicates that the warmest year was not 1998. The warmest years were in the 1930s. We've been cooling since the 1980s. To counter that report, the global warming crowd is reporting this winter may be warmer on average by as much as 4 percent. This means if the winter average is 40 degrees, it could get up to 41.6 degrees this winter.

Divine activity

IN RESPONSE to the story "Colleen's clear vision": I am curious why more people aren't moved by stories like this. How often do we see successes from people with pasts like this? I say there must be some divine activity for there to be so much transformation and faith. God bless them.

Booster-seat safety

I KNOW it's difficult to buckle your toddler into a booster seat, but it's even more difficult to scrape their faces off of the windshield and to pry their little teeth out of the air-conditioner vents. If you're not smart enough to protect your children from injury, you should have your license revoked and your children placed with someone who cares about their well-being.

Support questioned

WHY DID so many people send letters in support of Nathan Cooper? He broke the law and is a criminal. Why support his actions? Would you be proud for people to know that you wrote a letter in support of Cooper?

Sentencing issues

IT IS a sad day when Michael Vick is sentenced to 23 months for bankrolling a dogfighting ring and Nathan Cooper is only sentenced to 15 months for immigration fraud. In my opinion, the actions of Cooper were twice as bad that of Vick. Immigration fraud puts U.S. citizens at risk. What Vick did wasn't right either, but I don't feel animals should have more rights than humans. It is time for this country and our judicial system to wake up.

Pertinent quote

THE FOLLOWING quote reminds me of leftists who think embracing socialism is such a good idea: "Americans are so enamored of equality, they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom." -- Alexis de Tocqueville.

Where's the support?

AND WHAT is David Limbaugh's explanation for President Bush not signing the VA disability cost-of-living pay raise, which the House and Senate passed? Supporting the troops doesn't mean they lose our support when they come home battered and broken, does it?
