School discipline

IT is amazing how much control students and parents controlled by students have over school administrators when teachers try to exercise discipline. Then parents expect teachers to teach in this environment. Parents need to discipline their children so that school instructors can spend the valuable time teaching students.

Iraq promises

SINCE President Obama has taken office, he's authorized the expenditure of $76 billion for the Iraq war. He has done nothing to reduce the number of military troops deployed to Iraq, and 124,000 are huddling in bases wondering why this president hasn't kept his promises. The surge accomplished our strategic objectives. It's time to bring us home or get us in the fight elsewhere.

Debate winner

AFTER attending the health care debate between Newt Gingrich and Howard Dean, it becomes much more clear that there is no consensus on insurance reform within the Democratic Party. There is no clear plan. To allow any bill so poorly researched would be a disaster for our nation. Dean's poor rebuttals to Gingrich's points changed my mind on this issue. It was clear who won this debate.

Misleading cartoon

DON Greenwood's Oct. 28 cartoon is misleading. Over 60 percent of health insurance companies are not-for-profit organizations, and the others generally work on a 2 percent profit margin. Health care costs have risen dramatically because of the many new technologies and breakthroughs in medicine that occur almost on a daily basis. These are expensive. If the Greenwood wants to go after institutions ripping off the public, let him go after academia. Tuition rates have risen much faster than health insurance rates.

Use your vote

IF you do not like the new trash system and the way the city council and the mayor handle city business, then next time vote them out.

Taking precautions

IN response to the story "Bitter divorce case preceded Tuesday Cape Girardeau slayings": Sadly, this is becoming all too common throughout the country. Not only do we have to address the failures by the court system, we also have to educate our children and ourselves. Those who choose to involve themselves in a relationship must consider the volatility of the situation.

Comfy shoes

WOMEN who wear high heels are abusing their feet and their body. The feet are the foundation of the body. You need a comfortable shoe.

Available vans

THE university vans go by where I live many times a day. I don't have a college ID to use the university vans, but with as much fuel as is being burned, how come we can't figure out some sort of a system to where the vans would benefit senior citizens, veterans and disabled folks? We need that.
