WILL someone please repair the latest deepening dip in LaSalle Avenue before I break a shock?
WHEN I hear Obama speaking on his re-election tours lately, berating the rich and sympathizing with the Occupy Wall Street hooligans, I am reminded that he has accumulated about $1 billion for his campaign. Are his supporters naive enough to think that kind of money comes from $10 to $20 donations from the 99 percent? Not a chance. It's all from the 1 percent fat cats he so publicly berates. And you trusted this man to to change the way this country is run? Thank goodness that during the first two years when he had complete control of both congressional houses the only things accomplished were paying off his cronies with the trillion-dollar stimulus and passing a health care bill that is surely going to be gutted by the Supreme Court. Jimmy Carter should be elated now that he is not the very worst president. Hope you realized the audacity of any hope you had in Obama. I am a Democrat but not a fool.
MY good friend, Kay, has the gift of just coming up with little sayings, and she told me two new ones at lunch that I just have to share: Wrinkles are like cobwebs, they pop up overnight and you don't know where they come from. Pain is like love because everybody feels things differently.
THE traditional family -- married husband and wife with children -- is on the wane in the U.S. There are so many "family" arrangements they are too numerous to list. Nostalgic Speak Out grumblings about expressing a yearning for days gone by will do no good.
THE federal government is broken because the American people are polarized and divided into roughly two opposing political camps. The government is merely a reflection of the opposing and obstinate groups.
RECENTLY on the news they told of an Afghan woman who was raped. Her rapist was her brother-in-law. She had two choices: marry her rapist or spend 12 years in prison for adultery. Her sentence was commuted to three years. Wow. These are the people who our children are dying for?
A while back I saw a Scott City police car and officer on Interstate 55 northbound and on the north side of the Diversion Channel bridge with a car pulled over, obviously writing a ticket. Why are Scott City officers going into Cape Girardeau's jurisdiction, on the north side after crossing that bridge, to write tickets when that is Cape Girardeau's and the highway patrol's jurisdiction? Also, why are Scott City police officers always driving around in Cape Girardeau (especially during lunch and dinner times) in Scott City's police cars? Who pays the cost if they have an accident while off duty in these police cars? Who is paying for their gasoline to ride around throughout the day in Cape Girardeau?
WHAT I don't understand is why people think it is the government's job to provide jobs. Get off your lazy butt and get one yourself. Quit thinking the government owes you anything.
IF your tap water catches on fire because you've held a match or lighter too close to it, please don't worry. This is likely a harmless side effect of the environmentally safe practice known as hydrocracking, a method used to extract natural gas from underground.
ANOTHER Speak Out caller claims Joe Paterno did the right thing in only notifying his boss of the abuse. That caller's answer is legally wrong when referring to educators, not to mention being what is morally wrong as a human being. The caller went on to say that his record reflects what his mind was on, which was football. That statement is, sadly, true. Winning football games was more important than the safety of children, and that sums up Paterno's character. How can a person claim that's a positive thing?
MY family and I enjoyed the Christmas parade again this year. I do not, however, understand why others feel it is OK to smoke among large gatherings of people, especially with children nearby. I know it's not illegal, but that doesn't mean it's appropriate. I enjoy listening to my music very loudly, but you would complain if I sat next you at a parade with my music blaring. I also enjoy seeing my children running around and having fun. But I respect others and have taught my children to behave in public. Please show a little respect for others and choose not to smoke at public events.
WOE to those who believe Jackson's desire to annex Fruitland can be resolved through legal means. Surely many of you remember the Munich Pact. It was a legal agreement designed to bring about a peaceful end to a dispute with Germany in the late 1930s. The Germans had a desire for more Lebensraum (living space). So do the Jackson Indians. The Munich Pact was later deemed by the Germans to be a mere scrap of paper and was violated without concern. The same will occur with any legal agreement reached with Jackson. Jackson, like Germany, is being appeased, and, mark my words, Fruitland will be but the first step.
