*** Sports tests

HOW can PE teachers grade students based on their ability to play a sport? Not all people play sports. Skills tests for sports are unfair. A child should be graded on whether or not he tries and participates. These grades affect a student's GPA, which should not be affected because a student could not dribble a basketball.

*** Economic forecasting

MY dog is probably as able to predict the macroeconomic future of the U.S. as the economist at the foreclosure seminar or any other economist for that matter. With a few minor exceptions, the economic meltdown beginning in 2008 proved beyond a doubt that the ability of economists to understand, much less predict the future of, the big economic picture is nil.

*** Religion in school

OUR daughter came home with a choice of projects for her language arts class. One is a poem, and one is a movie. Both require a scene with a fake god and a prayer to that god. Since when is that legal? I thought everyone wanted religion out of schools. This is not the first time we have had this problem in the Jackson school system.

*** Texting both ways

WHAT? Twenty-seven states have banned texting while driving. Twenty-five of those same states offer traffic updates via Twitter. Missouri legislators have banned texting while driving to a degree, banning the practice for nonvoting teens.
