I THOUGHT the flags looked lovely the other night as I passed them at County Park North. You could see the faint light of the park, and you could still see all the flags at night because there's plenty of natural lighting. Maybe that's why there are no bright lights on the flags.
SOMEONE COMMENTED about fixing up the Reynolds House and the fact nobody wants to put money toward it. Who wants another museum in Cape Girardeau? There are bigger issues we need to worry about: school safety, public safety and the town in general. We don't need to worry about another museum or fixing another house up that's not going to be used for anything.
THIS IS in regard to the comment about our flags at County Park North being out after dark without no lights. It was raining. We couldn't take them down. They have to be dry before we put them up. Perhaps the person who made the comment would like to come out sometime and help us put the flags up and learn a little bit more about the flag.
PAT ROBERTSON might think he's speaking out for all Christians, but he is not speaking out for this Christian, because I do not go along with the things he says. I also do not go along with U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson and her support for Rudy Giuliani.
MANY THANKS to Sandy and a group of young guys and gals for raking the leaves on George and Blue Ridge. We all appreciate it.
CONGRATULATIONS TO Saxony High School on a fantastic performance of "Meet Me in St. Louis." Great job, cast. Terrific. Thank you for brightening the evening.
TURNING ON the sports, it was sad to see the pro NBA players. They looked like a bunch of gangsters with all their tattoos and their long hair. No wonder kids don't respect these professionals anymore. Then I switched over to the NFL and watched the running back for San Diego with his big, double-hooped earrings. Real men don't wear earrings. You never get a second chance to make a first impression. These pro players need to clean up their act and know that our children look up to them. I hope they do this in a responsible manner. It's past time. Coaches need to help too.
MOST PEOPLE who are addicted end up dealing to support their habits. Treatment of addiction is the best thing, but legalizing drugs would do one thing: it would take the crime out the issue. Prohibition should have taught us one thing: You cannot take away a person's addictive qualities by making something illegal.
THE FRIDAY-night lights are going out for a while for the Jackson Indians. Thanks, Jackson Indians, for playing with a lot of heart, playing with intensity and having a great season. It was awesome. You guys did great. Congratulations.
WITH OIL near $100 a barrel and gasoline at $3 a gallon, it is past time to drill for more of our own oil. Everyone should call their U.S. senators and representatives and demand that we drill for more oil, build more refineries and build more nuclear power plants. Alternative energy sources are fine, but that is a long-term solution. Right now, in a growing economy, we need more oil and refineries.
