Excellent editorial from Thomas Sowell in Thursday, Nov. 12's, Southeast Missourian newspaper, "The Ben Carson flaps." Once again, Mr. Sowell hits the nail on the head!
In response to the person who said we shouldn't be afraid of the effects of Obamacare and who referred to there just being bumps. You obviously do not work in the health-care field and do not know what is going on other than what the liberal media spoon feeds you. There isn't enough space here to outline and explain all the issues that have already resulted and that are snowballing. As someone who works in the financial area of health care and the mother of a doctor and a nurse, I can assure you that you are completely wrong. I wish you weren't because we are all going to pay the price, and not just in health-care issues.
The U.S. has a mixed economy. We have free enterprise but it is subject to justifiable regulation. There are also elements of socialism, such as Medicare. Many columnists published in the Southeast Missourian try to convince us that we are headed toward ideological socialism for all sectors of the economy. No we're not. That's absurd. The only meaningful arguments are over to what degree capitalism needs to be regulated. Very few want a completely unregulated market or pure socialism. Please quit wasting space by publishing so many columns on the meaningless margins.
A lot of folks, most of whom have no knowledge of history, think we are living through the most unstable period in American history. How ridiculous. The '60s (civil rights, Vietnam) were a lot more tumultuous. And then, of course, there was the Great Depression, the American Revolution, the societal upheaval caused by the Industrial Revolution, numerous other economic woes and, oh, yes, the U.S. Civil War. There is a tendency for us to always believe we are living during the most important time. We aren't.
The lid of my trash container is getting more damaged every month, my recycle can also. Please teach the operator of the truck how to empty them without damage! The plastic is so tough I can't wrap them back into shape.
