Recycling bins; A triumph; Trash problem; Checking 'facts'

Recycling bins

I don't live in Cape Girardeau anymore, but I read Speak Out to see what folks are passionate about these days. It looks like trash and recycling containers are the hot-topic issues. I've lived an several big cities that have these large bins supplied by the city, and people use them. They recycle, and it looks like the whole city really cares. Are people really that mad that they will now easily be able to recycle and have a receptacle given to them? Find something else to whine about.

A triumph

THE passage of a health care bill by the U.S. House was a bipartisan triumph. The Congressional Budget Office forecasts that premiums for this plan would be more expensive than for policies sold by private firms. Congratulations, House of Representatives.

Trash problem

I have seen how the new automated trash system works and do not like it at all. Where I put my trash container at the end of the sidewalk is also where I park my truck. There is no way the trash truck will be able to reach over my truck. I can't put my trash at the end of my driveway as I live on a hill.

Checking 'facts'

A recent comment accused David Limbaugh of putting his political philosophy ahead of "evidence and reason" for opposing the current health care legislation, then went on to cite the World Health Organization's infant mortality rate report as proof. The fact that this person was willing to accept a blatant lie directed at the U.S. by a U.N. organization without first double-checking the facts says a lot. When the WHO prepares a report like this, it merely collects data supplied by each country without any verification. The wildly varying definitions of infant mortality are not taken into account. When compared to other countries that use similar accounting measures, the U.S. has one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world.
