The street crew did a fabulous job of cutting up and removing our fallen tree on Marilyn Drive on Monday. And they did a great cleanup afterward. Thanks to the crew. You were appreciated. I'd like to say congratulations to the city's street department. After a year and a half of calling and calling to get them to come out and fix the street on Niemann Drive that they tore up, they finally made it. It's amazing, but they finally did it...

Thank you

Esquire repair

It's what's on the outside that counts. I love the fact they're fixing up only the facade of Cape's famous Esquire Theater.

Gas prices

I am just curious whether Republicans have noticed the price of gas lately.

Virginia election

Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli said the election was a referendum on Obamacare. Cuccinelli lost.

Crunching numbers

The reader's comments to the Gene Lyons column goes to prove how gullible people are and how grossly deceptive Gene Lyons really is. Obama did not cut the federal deficit in half as compared to Bush. He did not inherit a $1.5 trillion deficit from Bush. He himself increased the deficit to $1.5 trillion his first year in office and has maintained nearly that same deficit for the next three years of his term (shovel-ready jobs and union bailouts). True, the deficit has been reduced to almost half that amount this past year (2013) due to some tax increases and cuts forced upon him by the Republicans such as the sequester. To say he cut the deficit in half is a gross mislead because it was his own deficit he cut in half. Federal spending as a percent of GDP also is not way down under Obama as compared to Reagan or Bush. Obama's spending as a percentage of GDP has been at an all-time high of 23.4 percent, whereas Reagan's was 21.8 percent and Bush's was 19.3 percent. Clinton's, by the way, was 20.3 percent. All this Obama spending while unemployment is still above 7 percent and the worst economic recovery in 60 years with welfare recipients increasing at an all-time high. Sounds a little more like David Limbaugh is closer to being right when you have the right numbers to compare.

LEGO opportunity

Any area school administrators passing on events like SEMO's creative Lego competition should hang their heads in shame for failing to give potentially future scientists a first-class opportunity to show their stuff.
