In October, the Missourian reported that Mayor Rediger opened the Community Counseling Center Craft Beer Festival. I'm very concerned. What is the Community Counseling Center doing advocating a beer festival, or the product of beer? It leads to alcoholism, which leads people needing a Community Counseling Center because it wreaks havoc on the lives of family members dealing with the alcoholic. Couldn't this organization have found something better to do in order to raise money to support their business? In essence, this is keeping them in business.
Like Joe Sullivan, I also lived in the Ozarks years ago. In those days, Democrats controlled all of the county offices; in fact, Republicans seldom ran for office because they knew they had no chance of winning. When the Democratic Party went far left, people in the rural counties abandoned them. After reading Joe's diatribe about Jason Smith, also from the Ozarks, it became apparent that he's a bitter Democrat who can't accept the fact that his beloved Ozarkians have told his party to take a hike.
Occasionally, the Southeast Missourian publishes a plethora of what might be deemed "Pile on President Obama Day" Speak Out comments. Recently, one or more of the presumably ticked off commentators blamed the government shutdown on President Obama. Because of Speak Out's widespread influence in shaping public opinion, these comments would become the conventional wisdom if it was not for the Southeast Missourian's ongoing willingness to publish contrary views and help solidify the public's view that the blame for the government shutdown rests more with House Republicans by a margin of 2 to 1.
None of the critics of the Obamacare website seem to be anxious to refer to the F22 aircraft boondoggle that cost the taxpayers $22 billion.
By the time Republicans get around to successfully repealing Obamacare, we will already have replaced it with a single payer, truly universal health-care system.
One party wrote the bill that shut down government. One party cheered when it passed. Now they want to blame the Democrats for what they did. Politics is very dirty.
I have to agree with the conclusion of a recently published online magazine article to the effect that, more than a filibuster, Sen. Ted Cruz's rant served as an excellent Democratic fundraiser.
I have to laugh at the Democrats bashing Ted Cruz. He didn't get elected campaigning for Obamacare; he campaigned against it. He was only doing his job. He is a true patriot. He was trying to help all of us. And if you remember when Missouri voted on Obamacare, it was a whopping 71 percent against it and 29 percent for it. Thank you, Ted Cruz, for trying to help.
There are no speed signs between the two-mile stretch of LaSalle and Boutin Road -- only speed sign is at Fruitland, Mo. On LaSalle you will get a ticket if you go over 45 miles an hour. There are 50-some driveways and three or four businesses in the two miles. Route W is extra heavily traveled with trucks, trailer trucks, cars and motor cycles. Most of the traffic is going too fast for all the entrances and exits off the road. There are young children along this road, also. Also, the bridge at Pilot House across from Jaycee Golf Course is dangerous. You have to turn left or right at end of the bridge or go over the bank into golf course, which has happened already. With the sharp turns on the bridge, there is not enough room for two cars to make it safely, especially if one is going too fast. What is hard to understand is that MoDOT or the Cape County commissioners don't do something to make these situations safer for the general public.
For the record, involuntary part-time work in America is dropping, contrary to yet another Republican talking point memo misinformation campaign.
If you don't want to pay for your own insurance, then don't expect extensive medical treatment when bad things happen. Because everyone else who goes to the hospital ends up paying what you don't. What is more important to you: cigarettes and cable or being responsible for your own care?
Area schools should immediately abandon their "no in-school cellphone use by students" policies and encourage them to use their smartphones to upload and anonymously send videos of bullying and other threats to administrative personnel. And, yes, there's an app for that.
