THANKS, neighbor, for removing the dead tree from your front yard. Your yard looks nice now, and so does the rest of the neighborhood.
IT seems like nobody has any flu vaccine. The media say everyone needs a flu shot. But you can't find one anywhere. This doesn't make sense to me.
INSTEAD of carping and complaining about cap-and-trade, all of its many Missouri opponents should get on board with it and start thinking of creative solutions to make Missouri one of the leaders in the green and alternative-energy revolution.
SIX years ago Star Parker, a black woman, wrote "Uncle Sam's Plantation" to tell her story of what she saw living inside the welfare state and her transformation out of it. Parker had the privilege of working on welfare reform in 1996, which was passed by a Republican-controlled Congress. Parker says she thought we were on the road to moving socialism out of our poor black communities and replacing it with wealth-producing American capitalism. But instead we are now going in the opposite direction. Instead of poor America on socialism becoming more like rich American on capitalism, rich America on capitalism is becoming like poor America on socialism. There is some kind of irony that this is happening under our first black president on the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln.
A recent comment said people who didn't appreciate smokers should just stay away from those who smoke. I disagree. Smokers are in the minority. Smokers cause health problems. And smokers are the ones who should stay away. I'm tired of paying increased health premiums for people who want to put carcinogens in their bodies.
Why is the city sponsoring a haunted house through the parks and recreation department? Should not our tax dollars be used in a better way?
What about my right to not breathe cancer-causing smoke? What about my right to eat a nice dinner with my husband and 3-year-old child without having to poison our lungs? Nobody is saying you can't smoke, but you should be courteous enough to not smoke in a public place. I hope Cape Girardeau becomes smoke-free. Everyone knows that smoking and nonsmoking sections are a joke.
WE want our swine flu vaccine. When do we want it? Now.
I'm glad some of the recipients of corporate welfare are getting their comeuppance via a government crackdown on CEO's bonuses and salaries.
First lady Michelle Obama is going to go all out to try to get us to eat healthier and, for one thing, cut down on sugary substances. I suggest that she consider being armed to the hilt when she confronts the biggest culprit, the corn lobby.
If we're going to send troops to protect our interests, install new governments and nation-build, it might make more sense to send 500,000 troops to Mexico.
I'D like to thank my paper carrier. I live on County Road 458. Our carrier is always on time. I could set my clock by him. Thank you.
I'D like to congratulate the Cape Girardeau Police Department for 150 years of service. I've always supported the police. I have many relatives on the police department. I've always donated to the charitable organizations of the sheriff's department and the police department. However, after being pulled over for barely rolling through a stop sign, the officer could have given me a warning. He chose to give me a ticket. The police need to have a little bit more sympathy when they pull somebody over. They don't have to give a ticket every time.
LIFE is many things. To me, life is nothing without spirituality. One should be good and do right at all times. There is a time for self-introspection and self-actualization. Then comes spiritual cultivation. There are lessons to be learned. There is our sin that must be atoned for. There is a fear of our own mortality that we must face. And, we must face this fear alone. We must win. Life is elaborate. When between a rock and a hard place, we need to sidestep obstruction and danger. Remember, it is the experiences in life that we should cherish, for they polish us like gold. At the top of the mountain, the vista is always worth it.
