‘Courageous' movie

PERIODICALLY a movie comes along that can truly make a difference. That movie today is "Courageous" and is playing now at Town Plaza Theater. I encourage everyone to see it.

Brake for squirrels

MY bumper sticker reads, "I brake for squirrels." They could be related to Bushy, the St. Louis Cardinals rally squirrel.

Little representation

JACKSON and Cape Girardeau County have very little representation, as all three commissioners were in favor of the peripheral zoning and all three now are in favor of getting a third courthouse in Cape Girardeau.

Obama is scary

I have lived under 18 presidents of our great country, and for the first time, unlike all his predecessors, our current president scares me. Obama scares me because he has no military experience, he has never run a company, and he has never had to meet a payroll. Obama lacks the humility and class, because he always blames others.

Business questions

WITH our businesses still getting along and supposedly having lots of money in reserve with less employees, have they been over employed, having too many employees for good business? Another thing, how many people, when they go to the store to buy something, see whether the product is made in the U.S. before they buy it? Or do they discover that some time later that it was made in some foreign country?

Protesters' mess

THE people in New York who are picketing and protesting and camping out in the park are complaining about the conditions of the park and how unsanitary it is. I wonder who they think is messing that park up. Is it the people somewhere else, or could it possibly be the people who are camping out there and don't have enough ambition or care enough to clean up after themselves?

SS raise

I'M a senior citizen and I just came home from the grocery store and gas station. I paid $3.19 for a gallon of gas and I paid $3.54 for a gallon of milk. When is this all going to stop? Sometimes I can only get my medicine every other week. We need a raise in our Social Security. Let everybody say what they want to about putting money away. I was a single mother; my husband left me; I had three children; and every penny that I got by working went into the care of the children and the household.

Grading system

REFERRING to the trendy grading comment in Speak Out where they say the Jackson grading system is trendy and will eventually go away: Yes, it is a trendy fad and will hopefully go away sooner than later. But at whose expense? Our children. I personally want the very best education for my child, especially in those early formative years that set a strong foundation for a lifelong learner. I don't want my child to be used as a guinea pig with new, trendy programs tried out on them.

Judge's ruling

THIS is concerning the Commander Premier Aircraft Corp. How sad that this judge has granted them a stay of execution. That is so ridiculous, because here our fair city of Cape Girardeau is trying to evict this company from city-owned property where they have owed rent for years. This just makes no sense. If this were a renter in a landlord's private home, the courts would have allowed that landlord to have ousted the tenant ages ago.

Discriminatory taxes

TO the wealthy person who called in trying to figure an angle so he or she won't have to pay higher taxes, wanting to call it "discriminatory": Ask the smokers. They probably feel pretty discriminated against, and a lot of them are poor. They get to pay higher taxes because they smoke. People aren't too happy when people are drinking Champagne out of glasses, looking down at the protesters. I think that I would just pay the higher taxes and keep my mouth shut and be glad that God blessed you with as much as you have.

City bills

SOMETHING is wrong with these water, sewer and trash bills. I know people that live in $200,000 homes that pay less than me, and I don't even have a hot water heater and don't use 25 gallons of water a month. There is something wrong with this setup.
