Breaking the habit

REGARDING nicotine and addiction: I am a smoker and have been trying for years to quit. I have been through patches, gum and medication, and it has been impossible for me to put cigarettes down. I used to do illegal drugs. I've smoked pot, and I've done acid. I had no problem giving them up. I agree that cigarettes are a lot more addictive and a lot more dangerous.

Sad page in history

I AM perplexed at the contradiction of Jackson's pride in Andrew Jackson and the American Indian. Andrew Jackson was the force behind the Trail of Tears, a move that caused thousands of Indians to freeze or starve to death. It's a sad page in American history.

Full circle

I BET the Democrats of old such as Roosevelt and Truman are turning over in their graves because of what the party's values have become today. It's almost unbelievable what has happened to the party of the people and God's values. We almost have gone from a country of God to a socialist state.

Required weaving

SOMEONE complained about people weaving in and out on Kingshighway and on Jackson Boulevard. You have to. I go the speed limit, and I have to drive in the left lane sometimes and the right lane sometimes to pass people going too slow. It may appear that we're weaving, but that's because the people in the left lane won't move over like they're supposed to. This creates a dangerous situation.

Big photographs

I WANT to compliment the Southeast Missourian on the large photographs on the front page. They were beautiful. I've been out of town for about six weeks and hadn't read the paper while I was gone. My daughter saved them for me, and I was pleasantly surprised when I got home and amazed at how beautiful the front page was. I know it must be expensive, but the Southeast Missourian pictures are beautiful. Keep up the good work. You're a great newspaper.

Run on the sidewalk

I SAW a friend of mine running down the street way before sunrise. There's a sidewalk beside the street. Why don't runners use the sidewalk?

Put him away

I'VE BEEN reading Speak Out about the dope head who has been picked up, let go, picked up and let go. We live on the next street, and we are afraid to let our two children out because of the drug parties, the noise and everything else from his house. I cannot believe that one person can make it so disruptive for so many people. I do not understand why he is out and why something cannot be done. He has caused nothing but problems for everybody in this area. Please see that the courts can get him sentenced.

Showing compassion

I'M CALLING in regard to the Christ Church of the Heartland and the Angel Food Network. I personally have handed out all the food. I've watched people with absolutely nothing left at the end of the month from when they got their food stamps. I've watched people who were paying bills and didn't have enough to get the essentials for their family. What is wrong with this world when you can sign up for food stamps and get help? But when you don't want to have to go ask for help, you don't have many options. The churches are supposed to be getting involved. We're not supposed to sit back and watch people who are hungry. Why is this a debate? What happened to compassion and conscience?
