Affordable eating

I'VE GOT a good way for us poor folks to survive. This is what I do. I bought 10 pounds of red potatoes. Throw about three of the potatoes in the microwave. Poke holes in them so they don't blow up. Get some canned gravy. It's cheap. Let it cook for about five minutes. When the potatoes are done, put the gravy on top and microwave another 80 seconds. You know what? It's not bad. I do this twice a day, because I don't have any money. I guess it's the poor folks' steak and gravy. I appreciate the federal government doing what it has done, but this is the way I live. If I come up with some other good recipes, I'll be sure to share them.

Debate honesty

ONE DEBATE would be enough, because by the time the second one comes along, no one is being honest anyway. I think it was unfair that they were both put on the spot by being asked who they would name as Treasury secretary. I'd like one of the candidates to be honest and say, "I need some more time to think about someone good I would put in charge of this."

Mistakes were made

I ATTENDED the dedication to the federal courthouse. It was absolutely wonderful. But going over the timeline in the newspaper and looking at the dedication program that honored the architects and people who planned the courthouse, I don't understand why they were honored when there were so many mistakes made.

Time for prayer

I BELIEVE there should be prayer in our schools. God was taken out of our schools, and the nation has been falling ever since. Please pray for our nation.

More mud-slinging

WE CONTINUE to hear that the candidates are going to change Washington, D.C. As I watch the campaign, it's mud-slinging politics.

Community support

CAN I rain on Neal Boyd's parade? I preferred the young man from Door County, Wis. I also liked the man from Texas. He may not have had the greatest personality, but he didn't cry. That would be my first rule for not voting for someone. Crying turns me off. I'm of the generation that likes men to be men, and I don't like opera. That said, without community support I don't think Boyd could have won. I've never seen greater community support for someone.

County mowing

I WILL have to disagree with the highway-mowing comment. County roads are not getting mowed. I called the highway department about County Road 301 going into Jackson. The weeds are high, and it's dangerous. The highway department never responded. County Road 301 has not been mowed all year.

Pick up the brush

PUBLIC WORKS Department, how about doing the residents of the Boxwood Drive area a favor and gathering up these huge piles of brush? The brush is so tall at the curb of Spruce Street and Boxwood Drive that people cannot see when they pull out of Spruce onto Boxwood. I've seen several near-accidents and a couple of fender-benders. It could all be avoided if that brush was picked up.
