Power to nerds

WE READ the article in the Missourian on the nerd club in Springfield, and we're going to send them $50 to buy pizza at their next meeting. I hope Central High School starts one of these, because one of the things high school kids need to know is that 30 or 40 years down the road the kids who were the nerds will be running the world.

Parents as teachers

THE THEORY of gravity is no longer a theory. It's been proven. The theory of relativity has been proven. The theory of evolution has never been proven, so it's still a theory. I don't believe theories need to be in schools. I think religious theories are supposed to be taught at the home. I don't want a teacher who has studied math to teach my child the Bible. We have too many parents who want to complain about what the government is supposed to be doing. It would be nice if everybody would take responsibility. Then we wouldn't have to worry about the schools having to teach the things they're not supposed to have to teach.

Thanks to VNA

I'D LIKE to say thank you to the Visiting Nurse Association. It has wonderful workers. They took care of my mother while she was dying. They did a wonderful job. Thank you, VNA. I don't know what we'd do without you.

Don't need tourists

THERE ARE certain things we need in South Cape Girardeau, but a bunch of tourists isn't one of them.

Easy grades

REGARDING BONUS points for better grades in elementary school: Our teachers did that too. By junior high, there's no free ride. I'd like to see a teacher tell a kid, "Take that work home and redo it and bring it back when you've put a little more thought into it." There are no easy grades once you get to that point. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Teachers make more

I AM a school custodian. Most of the teachers, even beginning teachers, make about twice as much as I make a year.

Freedom over tyranny

SPREADING FREEDOM throughout the world is certainly far better than spreading tyranny over the people of the world. Who in their sanity could ever argue with that?

Shout 'Amen!'

AS A teacher, I'd like to shout "Amen!" to Evelyn Sewing for her "The naked emperor" commentary. I hope she sends copies to all the legislators.

Overhaul idea

AS A senior citizen, I am thankful for Social Security. I believe it can be overhauled. For over 30 years, we have been able to save on our taxes and for our retirement through IRAs and 401(k) plans. When we start taking money out of a 401(k) or IRA, have the banks send in 1 or 2 percent for Social Security. It took 30 or more years to put it in, and the government isn't giving us 30 or more years to take it out. Most of us now pay more in taxes than we did when we put the money in.

White with litter

IF YOU go to Bob Evans Restaurant to enjoy a meal, don't look out the windows. The highway embankment is white with litter from passing motorists. Many travelers stop to eat. Aren't we proud?

Bad motivation

WHEN YOU choose to watch filth (there's not much else left), that is your prerogative. But someone could be watching who would get the idea to rape or sodomize your wife, children or friend.

Violent games

GOV. MATT Blunt's decision to ban violent video games in prison seems like a no-brainer on the surface. However, vicarious violence might make these violent offenders less likely to commit violent acts against fellow inmates and those in free society when they get out of prison -- which, trust me, most of them will.
