The Scott County Public Water District is digging trenches and burying water main pipelines under the frontline levee. We all know that water pipelines sometimes move and spill huge amounts of water. Suppose the river is above flood stage and a minor earthquake occurs. If the water main under the levee burst, it would cause a blowout of water under the levee during a river flood. Pipelines

The water main pipeline should be buried across the road from the levee, not under the levee.

Dress codes

School dress codes are not a bad idea if parents have a choice of where they buy items. The local stores can supply clothing in a uniform style, and it would probably cost less than ordering them through the school. If a school patch is needed for the shirts, they can be put on by the parents. How about the school t-shirts, can't they be worn?

Movie listings?

What's up with the AMC Theater in Town Plaza? They recently put up new signs, but they do not list show times or titles of the movies showing there. They do not put this information in the paper, either. So how can we effectively patronize this venue without knowing what's showing?

Misguiding

The 112th Congress hadn't even been in office one day and they said they are going to cut spending. However, it is no where close to what they claimed they would do when they campaigned. Can they do anything but lie and say no?

Thank You, God

It has been good news to hear about the homeless man with the God-given voice. I am glad to see that God is in his life and helping him and bringing him and his mother back together. It is great to see and hear of news like this and not all the corrupt news that we have to listen to today.

No to smoking ban

I used to be a smoker. I haven't smoked in four years, but I have family members who still smoke. It is a right to smoke. I believe a smoking ban would hurt the local businesses in the community. For those who don't smoke, just make a choice not to go into the bars, casinos and other establishments that allow smoking. I also believe that since there are smoking and non-smoking sections in restaurants, that is sufficient.

Social Security

A recent speak out contributor that said they've already got all their Social Security. I'm getting ready to retire in a couple of years, and I never will draw all that they've kept from me. They've taken money from me ever since I was 13 years old, and I never will get it all back, especially the interest that should have been drawn in my own account.

Insurance problem

I would like to find out when our congressmen are going to do something about auto insurance and homeowner's insurance. They just keep raising the prices and stop covering stuff. This is getting to be ridiculous. Something has to be done, or you're going to be paying for something and not have coverage.

Justice problem

I think there is something wrong with our justice system if the gentleman's bail for vandalism is less than $10,000 and the damage is more than $10,000.

Republicans, spending

THE Republicans vow to cut spending. I'm sure they will, starting with the most vulnerable who have no say -- veterans, senior citizens, the disabled and now the middle class. Whatever they do, their bottom line won't be hurt. They talk a good talk to get the vote.

Casino crimes

DID anyone see the news where they had a shooting at the casino in Metropolis, Ill.? It makes you wonder what Cape Girardeau might be in store for. The city council pushed this gambling casino so hard, and they said it wouldn't raise the crime rate.

Redhawks football

CONGRATULATIONS to the Southeast Missouri State University football team and coach Samuel. We have not had a good football team in this town for years. We've had a good basketball team at the college level once or twice, and we've had quite a few good baseball seasons with coach Hogan. My hat goes off to coach Samuel. He did one heck of a job this year. Thanks again for a wonderful season.

Sullivan's column

JOE Sullivan was plain wrong when he stated that thousands of poor Americans will die if Obamacare is repealed. As a 30-plus year hospital employee, I can state that poor Americans are properly treated through Medicaid. In fact, it's against the law for health care providers to deny care. Let me ask Joe this question: If Obamacare is passed, how many Americans, poor or otherwise, will die because there won't be enough doctors?

Fireplace benefits

THERE are those who smoke that would have us believe that fireplace smoke is just as bad as cigarette smoke, but I disagree. It doesn't take long if you sit by someone smoking a cigarette before one, as a non-smoker, is coughing. A fireplace does not have that effect. Many people even like the smell of a fireplace. And with a fireplace there's a useful purpose. In this time of emergency preparedness, a fireplace is a good thing to have.

Kinder's wrong

I think Mr. Peter Kinder, our lieutenant governor in Missouri, does not have a handle on his people in Missouri. For one, we're not all Republicans. There are some Democrats out there who don't have to believe like he does. He needs to get input from all people and citizens of Missouri, not just the Republicans. The Republicans are out of tune. They're in office one week and are already defaulting on what they promised to do.

Modern day Tokyo Rose

SARAH Palin, Rush Limbaugh and Fox News with their news people have taken the place of Tokyo Rose in today's world. Our country would be a lot better off without misleading propaganda.
