Uniforms are good

I JUST read the article about wearing uniforms in public school. This is a great idea. Why haven't we thought of this before? The article said that if we had all children in uniforms, people at the school who shouldn't be there would stand out like a sore thumb. I think that's true. And you couldn't conceal a weapon in baggy clothes. Jackson School District should look into doing something like this. I think it would be great for the kids, and it would be great for the school.

Computer foe

I DO not agree with making things harder for teenagers. Driving is something that anyone can do, and I don't think grades should be tied to it at all. Some of the things that schools do make it harder to keep grades up, at least in our home. Our home was computer-free until recently. Then my husband felt like our child needed a computer. I cried the whole day over it, because the Internet influence was not something brought into my own home. But our son needed it for his business class. I think teachers would be better served if they would recommend kids use the library. Instead now we have this computer in my home. My teenage son plays chess games. He and his dad play war games practically all night. His grades have gone down in each class this quarter. This computer that was going to help things basically brought down his grades. Don't make it tougher for the kids.

Time to do something

IT'S TIME for U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson to stop walking lockstep with the rest of her buddies in the Congress. She is a rubber stamp. If something isn't done about the national health-care system, she's going to look like another phony politician trying to pick up a few votes here and there.

Beach memories

SAM BLACKWELL'S looking back to his younger days and Black Beach in San Diego made me look back also. My niece and I were there 20 years ago. There were a few people there without clothes, of course, lying on the beach, although they were hidden behind the boulders. I took a picture of one person -- legs only. It was truly an experience. By the way, we kept our clothes on too.

Proper signal

KUDOS FOR finally getting it right and installing a turn signal from Siemers Drive onto eastbound William Street. So many drivers never stopped at the flashing red light.

Improper ceremony

AS A Vietnam War vet, the Medal of Honor ceremony in Georgia was the worst I have ever witnessed. The purpose of the ceremony is to pay homage to the recipient of the medal, his life and his sacrifice. President Bush made it about himself and his reason for wanting to expand the war in Iraq and the setup for an attack against Iran and Syria.

Eroding rights

WHY WAIT to be surprised? Plan ahead for which of your rights you will allow to be taken away "for our own good." And when they are all gone, how good will that be?

Time to go

IT IS time to leave Iraq. The mission has been accomplished. Saddam Hussein is dead. That was the main reason for going to war. Let's get our guys out of there and save this country.

Low ratings

DEMOCRATS CONTINUE to talk about the president's low approval ratings of 34 percent. What's funny is that the Democrat-controlled Congress has a 32 percent approval rating. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

Out of bounds

I AM a single parent who saved money and bought my daughter her first car with the understanding she is to pay for insurance and maintenance. She parked in front of my house while she was out with her boyfriend. When she came back there was a dent in her car above the driver's side wheel, damaging the frame. The police were called. They have called the man who we know who hit the car, but according to the police since he is out of the city limits they can't get him. If this guy had killed someone, would they go to his house?

Lots of impact

ONLY 9 percent of the entire work force is going to receive a raise when the federal minimum wage law goes into effect. However, 100 percent of business owners will be effected. Business owners will raise prices and cut back jobs and hours for their employees in an effort to subsidize the Democrats' plan. Democrats are also planning to repeal tax breaks on Big Oil, which means higher gasoline prices. And who is going to pay for universal health care? Had enough yet?

Safer mailboxes

I UNDERSTAND the desire to make the postal workers' jobs easier. I agree, though, about the lack of security a curbside box provides. Back in December a woman was caught stealing mail from curbside mailboxes. Last year people were smashing mailboxes. I think the mail and the recipients are safer with mail slots and boxes on the house, not at the curb. Dog issues should be addressed with the owners.
