I want to thank whoever it is who delivers the paper on Carolyn Drive. Usually whenever the weather's extremely bad, they will bring my newspaper up and put it right here at my back doorstep. That is a very kind person. Thank you very much.
If I may, I would like to offer a Speak Out memorial to the late Phil Everly, who died recently, at age 74. Phil and his brother Don were a singing duo who broke on the scene in the late '50s. Their sound has been described as angelic, heavenly and out of this world. They had dozens of high-ranking hits on the Billboard charts. Three of my favorites were, "All I Have to Do is Dream," "Cathy's Clown" and "Wake Up Little Susie." Billy Jo Armstrong, the lead singer for Green Day, said they were more inspirational in many ways than Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and even Elvis Presley. They were long ago inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.
Someone in Speak Out mentioned only 2.1 million signed up for Affordable Health Care Act versus 345 million people living in the U.S. No. 1, the adults signed up and not the children. No. 2, Medicaid patients don't have to sign up. No. 3, individuals who already have employee insurance and some individuals do not have to buy it at all. And No. 4, there are Medicaid patients and some that are worth it can't afford it because they're in the Medicaid gap because of the stingy and self-centered Republicans.
How sad. That conservative columnist Mona Charen gets meaner by the minute. Now she stands ready to give the heave-ho to Head Start.
The cartoons on the Missourian's opinion page and the comments on global warming reflect the lack of understanding of the weather. No scientist or informed person calls the weather global warming. The proper term is climate change. Climate change means more severe weather and storms. Ninety-nine percent of scientists feel that we are in a period of climate change. So I think that these cartoons are not accurate and misinform the public.
Once again the city is spending money generated by the general revenue. Those bills are still going to have to be paid if the casino ever closes. Stop the foolishness.
I'm sitting here looking at the weather. The biggest part of the country's cold under un-average low temperatures. Sure glad we don't have global warming or it would be cold.
They tell us our country is in financial stress. Well then, why don't our leaders in Washington, D.C., and other states lead by example by cutting their own benefits, their retirements, their medical coverage, their salaries? Lead by example.
