Generational myth

THE World War II generation was certainly a great generation, but it wasn't because of rugged individualism. One example of how this generation was assisted by others through the government will suffice: the GI Bill, allowing hundreds of thousands of veterans to attend college and universities. This idea of rugged individualism is a myth.

Warming centers

I see Cape Girardeau has opened up two warming centers but that they close at 10 p.m. I hope this does not mean those who seek shelter are thrown out the door when 10 p.m. rolls around.

Extra effort

JUST wanted to share some good news and a blessing. This morning our newspaper carrier drove up into our driveway off Highway 177, leaving our paper by the garage door. Isn't that wonderful? Thank you.

Change name

SOUTHEAST Missouri State University has a name that relegates it to no more than a quarter-state category. Missouri State University of Springfield gained the coveted "State" status when it changed its name from Southwest Missouri State University. Since the "State" name is taken, what other name could Southeast take? Perhaps the answer is already in plain view on the Show Me Center. Missouri is already well known as being the Show Me State. Show Me State University would be a wonderful upgrade. It is time to upgrade from "Go, SEMO" to "Go, SSU."

Replace trees

IF trees are taken down for work on Bloomfield Road, then replace them as soon as construction permits. We lost a lot of beauty between Cape Girardeau and Jackson when the trees were taken out for roadwork. Don't wait until it is over to speak up.

Saving Bloomfield

JAMES Baughn's solution for historic Bloomfield Road is absolutely right. Connecting old Highway 74 to new Highway 74 (the Road to Nowhere) would relieve congestion and makes perfect sense. We've got to start making sense and wisely use our taxpayer resources. But good sense isn't a cash crop around here. We live in a town where a water park requiring year-round maintenance will be open just three months a year. But let's save Bloomfield Road. It's worth it.

Snow removal

I want to tell what good neighbors we have on Shalom Street in Jackson. The Dohogne boys cleaned off everyone's driveway and the street. Thanks a bunch.
