Sweet gratitude I'D LIKE to express my gratitude to the couple who, in this fast-moving society, were so thoughtful to an unknown elderly person. They must truly live by the Golden Rule. I shall not forget their kindness and will endeavor to pass it on. The strawberries were delicious. Thanks again...

Lucky to be working

SOME OF us won't get a raise this year or will be laid off. The police and firefighters are lucky they have a job. I get so tired of paid firefighters and police officers being put in a class all by themselves. What about the ones who volunteer their time and risk their lives every day?

Can't wait for fair

I CAN'T wait until the SEMO District Fair. I know my dollars will be going for Three Dog Night. Some years it's hit or miss for what they bring in for entertainment.

Mascot memories

THE GUEST column by Jennifer Ferrell, "Good reasons to keep Indians," covers all the right reasons for keeping the Indian name and mascot. Who said a mascot has to act silly and entertain? When I was a student in 1947, I was on the staff of our yearbook, "The Pow Wow." There are just too many memories associated with the Indian name. Changing the name will just cause a rift.

Shameful coverage

I WAS shocked that your newspaper put such a small photograph and write-up on the front page about the World War II Memorial dedication on Sunday. You all should be ashamed of yourselves for treating the heroes of World War II and their families that way. You need to apologize. If it wasn't for those World War II veterans, you would not be around today, I'm mighty sure.

Prostitutes at party

I LIVE off Lorimier Street, and we've had prostitutes and drug dealers on our block. I've called the police to have them step up the patrol in this area. I've seen them drive by our street once. At my fiance's birthday party the prostitutes were propositioning us. A cop was at the party, and his response was, "Oh, yeah, that's just the local prostitutes." That's the kind of police service we get for the taxes we're paying. We need to get rid of all the drug dealers and all the prostitutes.
