Sticking up for Delta
IN RESPONSE to the person who is unhappy with the Delta School District's administration: The school board and administration cannot address a problem if it is not brought to their attention. If you know of a problem, you should bring it to the board. Meetings are the second Thursday of each month. If you are still not satisfied with the outcome, school board elections are held every year. The only things I ever read in the newspaper about Delta are always negative from someone who won't get involved. If you cannot see some of the good things, you need to open your eyes. The community along with the school have held fund raisers to help a student go to Australia for an international cross country meet. The community gives scholarships every year at graduation. The Booster Club and Youth League hold tournaments every year. Regardless of what anyone says, Delta is a good place to live and a good place to send your children to school.
Use existing buildings
THE CITY is looking at building a new public works building for $9 million dollars and a costly, but needed, renovation to the police station. I do not understand why the city would not purchase the former Albertson's building while it sat empty and use it as a police and fire headquarters or move public works into it. It would have been less to combine police, fire and 911 operations all in one building and build a cheaper fire station No 3. Also, it already had large fuel tanks and pumps for fueling city vehicles and a large lot for later expansion. A police station should be in the center of town, and this would have been 20 blocks to the city limits just about in each direction and at a major intersection for responding to calls. Look at what we have, not what we can build.
Character at home
I DON'T think that you get character from Boy Scouting. I think you get that from your parents and your upbringing. What scouting can do is confirm or build on that character. If there's not strength in the family and at home, then scouting can't give you something that isn't there.
What we learn
FREEDOM OF religion is when you're allowed to go to church anywhere you want. But when you're at school, you're there to be educated from the books they have, and it doesn't hurt being introduced to new things. Most school books are fairly conservative, so I don't think it's going to hurt anyone a bit to learn the Big Bang theory along with creationism on Sundays.
Awesome sight
I JUST looked out my window and saw that beautiful bridge. It's all lit up, and it is just gorgeous. I'm in awe of it. Thank you so much.
Beautiful blue river
ON A beautiful clear day when you drive onto North Main Street from Broadway and view the river from downtown Cape Girardeau, the reflection on the river is as blue as the sky. Enjoy Mother Nature on a sunny day. It produces an illusion.
Don't pity the rich
IT MAKES my blood boil for any middle-income person to defend the rich and say they're being overtaxed. Pity the poor rich man. The way I see it, the rich can take care of themselves. They always have and always will.
Working together
OUR COMPLIMENTS to Delta High School FFA on the community breakfast. The food was very good, but it was also very good to see young people working together long before daybreak and enjoying themselves. Thank you, Delta FFA and adviser Alisha Swindle. We will be there next time.
Spending the money
CONSERVATIVE Republicans are very generous with the people's money when it comes to the rich and themselves. This highway spending apparently must benefit their party, or Kit Bond and Jim Talent wouldn't be for it. Don't get it in your head that conservative Republicans are skimpy with their money. I hope this area makes a turn and goes Democratic in this election for the first time in God only knows how long.
