I have been a part of Southeast Missouri State University for 51 years. There were probably about 1,000 students enrolled during my four years. I loved every minute I was there. Everyone supported all the athletic teams, plays, clubs and all the events that happened on campus. All of the students supported the teams and knew the players and coaches.

One of the things I always thought was special was what happened before each football game. Up on the big rocky hill where the flag is on the visitors side, there was a special place where a beautifully dressed Indian chief stood as we prepared for the game to begin. Everyone sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" and the school song as the band played. The Indian held his hands up high as we all sang. I always felt the Indian was honored and special to all of us.

I still think the Indian is special to many people. I have heard many folks with Indian backgrounds (I am one) say Southeast has always treated the Indian with great honor and respect.

After all these many years of being an Indian fan, I hope we will continue to keep our Indian as our symbol. To me, Indians show strength, honor, history and beauty.
