To the editor:
On Saturday, citizens of Cape Girardeau and the surrounding towns will have an opportunity to participate in the nation's single largest service project, Scouting for Food.
This event last year brought in more than 60,000 cans of food for the Salvation Army, FISH and other local agencies.
Every last can is used right here in the Cape Girardeau area.
It has been my honor to be part of Scouting for Food for more than 10 years. I would like to ask for your help on behalf of the Boy Scouts.
Many of the Scouts who will be collecting donations Saturday are 7 to 12 years old. Scouts at this age are going to miss some bags, but this is where you can help.
Please place your bags where they can be seen from the street: on the edge of front porches, by the front step. If you must use a different bag, please write "Scouts" on it with a marker. And try to have your bags out by 9 a.m. We will start collecting about 10 a.m.
If your bag is not picked up by 1 p.m., you can bring it by the 4-H livestock barn in Arena Park until 2 p.m., or you may call the Boy Scout office at 335-3346 to have it picked up.
You can also drop it off at any Union Planters bank during the next week.
With your generosity, we shattered the record last year. Please help us set the record this year.
JERRY SIEMERS, Scouting for Food Coordinator, Shawnee District Boy Scouts of America, Cape Girardeau
