Cramped, dingy classrooms. Hurried lunches. Busing students 10 miles so they can have a large enough gym to practice in. These are some of the desperate situations the Scott City School District has endured for years because of critical space needs.
Those days are about over.
Within the next month, a multimillion-dollar building project will be finished, meaning that the district will be able to offer its students more convenient and education-friendly accommodations.
The 47,000-square-foot addition, with 20 elementary and middle school classrooms, is north of the existing school complex.
The project also includes the construction of a new 7,600-square-foot industrial technology building that holds a large work area with some new equipment, a classroom equipped with 14 computer stations and locker rooms for the school's football stadium. This new building will also free up existing space for other purposes.
Teachers and administrators say the addition is extraordinary and is state-of-the art. One art teacher said, "It's like a dream."
Scott City voters passed a $3.5 million bond issue two years ago to pay for the additional space. They should be commended. Their children will benefit from their generosity.
