The German people use the term "Mach" amiably to describe Americans, meaning that overwhelming can-do spirit enabling Americans, as it has over centuries, to meet adversity and prevail. The spirit that disregards misfortune and wretchedness on the road to triumph. The Spirit (capitalization intended) that advances good, truth, freedom and liberty, sometimes where it hasn't even been dreamed. Republicans have it right. We need more school administrators with Mach. Accountable people who lead students and their teachers to claim victory over apathy, adversity and ignorance. School leaders who don't hide behind excuses and don't suffer waste but prevail to educate all the children we've been leaving behind.
