School boards

A vibrant education system carries with it many benefits. But to have great schools, we must have strong and principled leadership from teachers, administrators and school board members. The latter is one way for concerned parents and other citizens in the community to make a difference.

Starting today and ending Jan. 17, those interested in serving on the school boards for the Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Scott City school districts can file for election or re-election for three-year terms. All three school districts have two open seats to be filled in the April 3 elections.

Cape Girardeau School Board members whose seats expire in April are Kyle McDonald and Denek Murphy. Cathy Goodman and Brent Wills will see their terms expire in Jackson. And in Scott City, the terms for Gary Miller and Keith Simpson will expire.

To be eligible for service on one of the school boards, an individual must be a U.S. citizen and resident taxpayer of the district, have resided in Missouri for one year preceding their election or appointment, and be at least 24 years old. There are no consecutive term limits for school board seats.

Those interested in serving may file at their district's board office during regular business hours.
