RIVERFEST CROWDS, ELECTRICAL CONTRACTING AND MULES: FOR STATE ANIMAL WHY NOT THE MISSOURI MULE?

The Missouri mule -- most people probably think it's our state animal.

It's not. Missouri has no animal with that current designation, although we have a state flower, state song and even a state fossil.

The American Legion Post 63 in Cape Girardeau has taken up this mule project, and hopes to promote the issue all the way to Jefferson City.

We wish them luck in their efforts.

Leading the campaign are Legion members Charles Woodford and John Yallaly. They're taking the campaign seriously, but with a touch of good-natured humor. It's a sensible approach.

No, it's not an earthshaking issue, but so what? Government is often too bogged down in statistics and crises. Who says you can't have a little fun and get something done along the way?

As they promote the mules, Legion members are providing a real education on mules for younger Missourians. Many don't realize the importance these beasts played in the formation of our state.

Missouri continues its reputation as the Show Me State. That expression was first coined by a Cape Girardeau County congressman. These American Legion members have plenty of facts and figures to back up their case, and show legislators it's a good idea.

It certainly looks like this mule tribute may be long overdue.
