Remembering others

Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. -- Matthew 25:40

Of all the gifts that were exchanged during this Christmas season, one of the best was the time and energy of countless volunteers who gave presents of unselfish caring.

As a result, shut-ins were visited by cheerful volunteers who not only provided generously donated gifts, but also took some time to visit dispense more than a few hugs.

Patients and staff in hospitals were remembered, too, and the special attention helped make being at work or in a hospital bed more cheerful in keeping with the season.

Dozens of churches joined forces to participate in the Angel Tree Christmas program, which provides gifts and attention to the children of parents who are incarcerated in state and federal prisons.

And musicians gave their time and talent to fund-raising events for agencies whose much-needed services depend on the generosity of people who are willing to give when there is a real need.

How fortunate we are to live where taking care of others is regarded as a good way to spend the holidays.

Thanks to all the volunteers who organized and participated in so many good efforts to make Christmas special those who are alone or too often overlooked.
