Southeast Missouri students and teachers seem to have a firm grasp on the concept, considering their triumphs through Reading Renaissance.

That's a program that encourages children to read not only for the fun of it, but for rewards. The students don't just have to finish reading a book, they must prove they comprehended it by passing a test administered by computer.

St. Mary Cathedral School in Cape Girardeau has been recognized by the program for five years running. The students spend a whole hour each day reading their books.

Other individual classrooms around the area have been recognized as well, devoting time to reading.

Teachers report that even young children sit still for the reading time period, totally engaged in their books. One principal said the program helped raise standardized test scores overall.
