To the editor:

I am a teacher in the Cape Girardeau School District and want to take this opportunity to commend several individuals for taking an active interest in the education of our city's youths. The fifth graders I currently work with are participating in a unit called "Career Exploration." It was my hope that my students would have the opportunity to visit with professionals in their areas of interest. After sending out over 50 letters to physicians, dentists, orthodontists, veterinarians and people in the fine arts, I received three responses. (I also sent several e-mails and made a few phone calls).

I wanted these three men to know how very much we appreciated their interest, time and effort. If we had more professionals share knowledge of their careers, our city might reap the benefits. If you know Dr. John Egbert, Dr. Shanon Kirchhoff or Dr. Charles Wilson, please shake their hands and thank them for the difference their extra effort makes. I can't imagine this giving nature does not permeate their offices and classrooms as well.
