Cape Girardeau voters made some important decisions last week that will have a far-reaching impact for years to come. By hefty majorities, the voters chose a new mayor and supported a $40 million bond issue for the Cape Girardeau School District.

Harry Rediger, who was sworn in as mayor Friday, has been an active participant in community affairs for many years. His understanding of complex issues facing the city and his ability to grasp new information will serve him well. Rediger already has reached out to both his opponent, businessman and former councilman Matt Hopkins, and the residents of the city as he begins his four-year term.

Voters continued their support for the school district's comprehensive list of maintenance, improvement, expansion and construction plans.

Over the past decade Cape Girardeau voters have responded to needs for schools, streets, parks and the public library. They will be asked again in August to renew another five-year street program funded by the Transportation Trust Fund.

Improvements funded by voter-approved measures in recent years have resulted in major enhancements to our community. Those who propose sound plans and those who give their support are both to be commended.
