It's one thing to talk about improving the community. It's another matter to dig right in.
A group of about 15 Cape Girardeau police officers spent some off-duty hours last week picking up trash on the corners of Good Hope and Middle streets.
They didn't have to do it. They saw a need and volunteered their time. They collected and hauled off nearly 15 large bags full of trash.
Yes, it was a small thing. But small kindnesses have a way of adding up.
These officers deserve a thank you for their thoughtfulness. It takes a lot of caring to build a community -- at all levels.
