Tonight about a dozen Cape Girardeau residents will have the first of eight weekly two-hour sessions as part of the police department's citizens police academy.

Over the next few weeks these interested citizens will learn not only what police officers do and how, they will learn why as well.

The citizens police academy, which started 14 years ago, immerses its participants in police procedures. At the end of the academy, these folks will have a good understanding of the situations faced by the men and women who are trained to protect us.

Last year no citizens police academy was conducted because there wasn't enough interest. This year's participation is a good indication that city residents want to become informed about this essential service.

As a part of the academy, participants will make a trip to the police department's shooting range, watch a SWAT team demonstration, experience wearing the gear worn by SWAT team members and participate in a ride-along with an on-duty police officer.

Previous participants in the citizens police academy say it is one of the most eye-opening experiences any citizens can have. It's great that this year's class is taking an interest in their city and in its police department.
