To the editor:
It seems that with each passing day the controversy over road construction in Cape Girardeau becomes a bit more heated. I would like to make a modest proposal for resolving some of the issues at hand.
Hire a van that would seat about six people. Invite Joe Sullivan, Al Spradling and Mike Miller to ride in this van along with a photographer from the Missourian and two objective observers who are citizens of Cape Girardeau or of the county. Go to all of the construction sites and see what is going on. Take pictures of the worst road hazards at each site. Try to estimate when the project will be finished. It would also be a good idea to visit the area of the roundabout and see if trash from the construction work is still there. Everyone should take notes. The photographer should take pictures. Then publish the findings and photos in the paper.
This may not speed up the various projects, but at least it would give drivers in this area an idea of what is really going on. You might be surprised how patient people can be if they know there is an end in sight to the mess throughout the city.
