For the eighth year, the Southeast Missourian Jr., a special monthly newspaper for and by young readers, will have its Parks and Rec Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the Osage Community Centre in Cape Girardeau. Hundreds of youngsters will participate in games and activities. Prizes will be awarded.
Participants can bring a sack lunch or purchase food from concessions at the center. Plenty of free ice cream, soda and cookies will be available.
Cheryl Ellis, an advertising sales representative for the Southeast Missourian, created the Southeast Missouri Jr. several years ago as a way of reaching children and getting them involved in healthy, wholesome and entertaining learning activities. Since, then "The Junior" has won numerous regional and national journalism awards.
Thanks to the city's Parks and Recreation Department and many helpers, the annual Parks and Rec Day has become one of the major events of the year. Congratulations to everyone who makes it happen.
