On Good Friday we remember Jesus' sacrifice

It's odd that the day we remember Jesus' sacrifice on the cross is called Good Friday. Crucifixion and good don't ordinarily belong in the same sentence. But for believers in Christ, today is the day we remember what Jesus' death on the cross means.

You may hear the saying, "It's Friday, but Sunday is coming." Good Friday is the day we remember the perfect sacrifice made on our behalf. It's the reason for our eternal hope. It's the reason we celebrate Easter as Resurrection Sunday.

There will be services and events today and this weekend to attend. One local opportunity is the Way of the Cross devotional walk. The walk is now in its 14th year and features music, prayer and rotating individuals carrying a cross through downtown Cape Girardeau.

The walk begins at noon at the courtyard gazebo of the Common Pleas Court House on Lorimier Street. There will be 14 locations along the 1.2-mile walk. It's set to travel along Broadway to Pacific Street and then head east on Independence Street and finish at the starting point.

The event is sponsored by the Cape Ministerial Alliance and past years have seen as many as 200 individuals join the effort.

The walk is expected to take about two hours, though people may participate for part or the entire event. Centenary Church will provide a bus for those who can't walk the route, and bottled water will be available.

In the event of inclement weather, the service will move to Old St. Vincent's Church on Spanish Street.

We hope you consider participating in the walk. Past years have brought out many, and the opportunity to corporately worship and take part in the walk has become a meaningful aspect of local Easter celebrations.
