To the editor:
As a former theater student and graduate of the department, I'd like to respond to the Speak Out caller who is upset at the involvement of community members in Southeast Missouri State University theater productions.
The caller said professors say performance is "an opportunity for learning." However, it is only one, because in theater numerous opportunities for growth exist. There is a wealth of education students can receive through observation and work with older people. Roles written for people of all ages, not just college-aged people. I had fantastic parts in college, but I also had many disappointments. After not getting parts I wanted, I went to work in other areas: sound, lighting, props, stage crews or chorus roles. By keeping involved, I was able to see the commitment and dedication that seasoned performers bring to their roles.
True, many parents pay for their children's education. However, because Southeast is a state university, much of the funding for the theater program also comes from Cape Girardeau taxpayers. Therefore, not only do community cast members offer diversity and experience, they have a right to be there because of their financial contributions.
To pursue a career in theater means facing ups and downs, from the exultation of ovations to the discouragement of casting rejections. I hope the current acting students can embrace the assorted talents of community cast members and use the experiences to build their own understanding of the complex and wonderful craft.
