To the editor:
It doesn't take long for news to be put on the back burner when current events arise, but that is progress, and you can't stop it.
Memories of previous years, however, remain special and never fade. I wonder if the composer of "Thanks for the Memories" had that in mind when he wrote the lyrics.
The large First National Bank on Main Street gave prominence to the downtown area. Several offices occupied the second floor. Many will remember Clyde Harris, president of the bank, who served with dignity.
The Buckner-Ragsdale store that carried apparel for both women and men also gave dignity to the downtown area.
Without a doubt, the Woolworth 5-and-10-cent store stands credit for much of the downtown's popularity.
Despite the many dear memories that now sit on the back burner, the year 2006 will show much in the way of surprise and accomplishment. That is what keeps the clock ticking, the wheels rolling and the spirits high. A new year is like a breath of fresh air.
Enjoy every minute. Time moves fast, and so does my age.
