There are so many excuses to drop out of college. Money. Family. Time. Nobody had a better reason than Leslie Menz. But she will march with her classmates today in Southeast Missouri State University's commencement.
Menz, 24, suffered three strokes from a blood clot in her brain in September 1999. She was in a coma for four days. Her family prepared for her death.
But she recovered and went back to school in January, unsure of how the ordeal would affect her ability to learn and remember. She was fine perhaps even better, because she was at peace with herself and others. She says she doesn't allow herself to hold grudges or be bitter.
Menz earned her bachelor's degree in criminal justice and would like to be a probation or parole officer or perhaps a juvenile officer.
What an excellent career choice for a heroic young woman who knows all about second chances. She is an example for anyone who would consider giving up.
