New police station provides more space, modern facility for Cape

The new police station has been a long time coming.

City officials have been talking about the need for a larger police facility for at least 15 years. At the Sprigg Street location, closets were turned into office space. Trailers parked in the parking lot. There was simply too little room for the officers to do their work.

The public is invited to a ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. today, and open houses will be scheduled at a later date.

The facility, built at 2530 Maria Louise Lane near Arena Park, will house not just the police operations but the Cape Girardeau Municipal Court as well. The court was previously held at city hall.

Officers will be making the move beginning today and throughout the weekend, and the administrative offices will be closed, though emergency services will remain. The administrative offices will reopen on Monday. Municipal court offices will be closed March 6, and there will be no court on March 6 or 8, according to the department's Facebook page.

It's an exciting time for the police department to finally move into a facility more suitable for their work.
