To the editor:
I am writing to raise this area's awareness of an agency that is vital to this and surrounding communities. The Southeast Missouri Network Against Sexual Violence is a not-for-profit child advocacy center and rape crisis center in Cape Girardeau that serves 10 counties in Southeast Missouri.
SEMO NASV provides forensic interviews, sexual-assault forensic exams, advocacy and counseling to children who are alleged to have been sexually or physically abused. The same services are provided for adult victims of sexual violence. SEMO NASV -- working as a team with law enforcement, the juvenile office and children's division -- saw more than 500 children from those 10 counties last year, double the cases seen in 2003.
All of the services at SEMO NASV are free and provided by caring and compassionate individuals in a relaxed, kid friendly environment. SEMO NASV also provides free educational programs for children, adults and professionals.
SEMO NASV is housed in a donated basement office space, which has become too small to accommodate the staff needed to care for Southeast Missouri's children. This agency is funded by grants and donations and is in dire need of more space but cannot afford to purchase it.
Anyone who endures abuse will be treated with respect and care at SEMO NASV. Please, Southeast Missouri, open your hearts to this organization and help any way that you can. These services are invaluable, and this agency is an asset to our area. To contact SEMO NASV, call 573-332-1900.
