Mother's Day

Eighteenth-century woman Martha Ballard coined a now popular phrase in her journal Nov. 26, 1795, "A woman's work is never done as ye song says, and happy She whose strength holds out to the end..."

For mothers, this phrase is all to fitting considering the juggling act many sustain. From raising children to managing a household to working outside the home, many of today's mothers are nothing short of a modern day superhero.

Many ministers this weekend will preach on Proverbs 31, speaking about the woman of noble character. Noble character is what we all seek from our mothers at some point and time. When joyous moments in life occur, who do we call? When faced with difficult decisions and in need of motherly wisdom, who do we turn to? And when times are tough and our spirits are down, who's there to cheer us up? You guessed it: Mom.

But for some, Mother's Day is not an entirely joyous occasion. Some have lost their mothers and feel a sense of sadness when this day comes around. And while a mother can never be replaced, many of those whose mother has passed away turn to other family members or motherly friends. These wonderful ladies are just as much a reason to celebrate the day.

So make today special. Buy mom a corsage to wear to church. Take her out to eat. Just do something special today to tell mom thanks.
