A group of cycling enthusiasts plans to approach Cape Gir-ardeau officials with a sensible proposal to establish bike lanes and improve trails for cyclists.

A total of 23 bicycle-vehicle accidents were recorded in 2005 and 2006. They resulted in 17 injuries and one death. Nine of the bicyclists involved in accidents were under age 16.

The bicyclists propose painting bike lanes on Lexington Avenue, Sprigg Street, Perry Avenue north of Broadway and West End Boulevard south of Broadway. City engineer Jay Stencel says the streets are wide enough to accommodate a bike lane, though some parking would be lost.

A recent study rated the quality of life in Cape Girardeau County the third highest among the state's rural counties. This proposal would only make it better.
