MoDOT listening to Jackson residents

After several years of studies and surveys, the Missouri Department of Transportation released perhaps the most unpopular road plan in the history of Jackson: Officials wanted a concrete median along Highway 34/72 from the city's main intersection 3.5 miles west with left turns possible only at lighted intersections.

Those along that stretch had hoped for five lanes and strenuously objected. The city council sent a letter in dismay. MoDOT argued that a median is far safer than a turn lane.

Now Jacksonians have received a slight reprieve. The median will begin three-tenths of a mile west of the intersection with U.S. 61/Highway 25, good news for the businesses whose workers and customers need to make left turns off of Highway 34/72, primarily Ceramo, Kasten Masonry and Rubbermaid.

MoDOT listened to residents on this issue. The fact officials there made a concession on this much is reason for hope for others along the stretch who clearly don't want a median.
