Sometimes we don't know how handy something is in our daily routine until it is taken away. Folks who use the Millersville Post Office certainly got a wake-up call recently when the trailer that housed the post office was shut down. Postal patrols who pick up their mail at the 40 post office boxes were sent to the only convenience store in the small community. For all other services, they must go to post offices in Sedgewickville or Jackson.
But postal officials and U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson's office say this is only a temporary situation. Despite the many rumors, there are no plans to close the Millersville Post Office. That should be good news.
However, dealing with the government is never a sure thing, so it's understandable why so many Millersville residents are deeply concerned.
The problem arose when the lease on the land where the post office trailer was situated ran out. The U.S. Postal Service said it wasn't able to negotiate a new lease. But, the postal service says, it is looking for another Millersville location.
That shouldn't be too difficult. Several property owners have said they have space to lease.
So for now Millersville folks are inconvenienced -- a situation that might have been avoided with better planning by the postal service. Now they are waiting for the postal service to make good on its pledge to keep the Millersville Post Office in operation.
