KFVS12 general manager Mike Smythe, who will retire Nov. 30, has made a significant impact in Cape Girardeau and the greater Southeast Missouri area.
The second-longest-serving GM in station history, Smythe first came to KFVS in 1998. During his tenure, Smythe has come into our homes through the "Heartland Business Break" feature and his "ViewPoint" editorial segment, the latter which earned him nine Missouri Broadcasters Association awards for best editorial and an Emmy Award in 2010.
In addition to his on-air opinions and managerial role at the station, Smythe has been an active member in the community, offering vocal support for causes he supported and thoughtful commentary on local boards.
In a recent story printed in this paper, Smythe said how proud he was of the strong relationship between KFVS12 and other local media, including the Southeast Missourian. We echo that sentiment. Such a relationship has been positive for the community -- not least in promotional support of important community organizations. One of our favorite experiences was working together to help bring the Trans-Siberian Orchestra to the Show Me Center, which helped benefit the United Way.
Not every town has media outlets that work together as strongly as those in Cape Girardeau do. That Cape does is a tribute to Smythe and his management team.
Congratulations to Smythe on a great career. We wish him all the best in retirement and hope he visits Southeast Missouri often.
